Legislation Amending Site Remediation Reform Act Stalls in Committee
December 13th, 2013
Legislation which would amend the Site Remediation Reform Act (SRRA) to extend a deadline dealing with the completion of certain remedial investigations was held in the Senate Environment Committee on Thursday. Senator Smith, who chairs the Committee, held the bill because the NJDEP failed to appear to testify on the bill. Senate Bill S-3075 would extend the timeline two years for certain cases thus avoiding direct oversight from NJDEP. According to NJDEP, approximately 4,000 sites could be subject to “direct oversight” if the extension is not granted. A Responsible Party would lose all control over a cleanup if it enters “direct oversight” by NJDEP. The Assembly version of the bill will be heard in the Assembly Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee on Monday. CIANJ supports the legislation.
